Matthew - Chapter 17

	Mat 17:1	Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain.
	Mat 17:2	As the men watched, Jesus' appearance changed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothing became dazzling white.
	Mat 17:3	Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.
	Mat 17:4	Peter blurted out, "Lord, this is wonderful! If you want me to, I'll make three shrines, [fn] one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
	Mat 17:5	But even as he said it, a bright cloud came over them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him. Listen to him."
	Mat 17:6	The disciples were terrified and fell face down on the ground.
	Mat 17:7	Jesus came over and touched them. "Get up," he said, "don't be afraid."
	Mat 17:8	And when they looked, they saw only Jesus with them.
	Mat 17:9	As they descended the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen until I, the Son of Man, have been raised from the dead."
	Mat 17:10	His disciples asked, "Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes [fn]?"
	Mat 17:11	Jesus replied, "Elijah is indeed coming first to set everything in order.
	Mat 17:12	But I tell you, he has already come, but he wasn't recognized, and he was badly mistreated. And soon the Son of Man will also suffer at their hands."
	Mat 17:13	Then the disciples realized he had been speaking of John the Baptist.
	Mat 17:14	When they arrived at the foot of the mountain, a huge crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said,
	Mat 17:15	"Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
	Mat 17:16	So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn't heal him."
	Mat 17:17	Jesus replied, "You stubborn, faithless people! How long must I be with you until you believe? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
	Mat 17:18	Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well.
	Mat 17:19	Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, "Why couldn't we cast out that demon?"
	Mat 17:20	"You didn't have enough faith," Jesus told them. "I assure you, even if you had faith as small as a mustard seed you could say to this mountain, `Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible." [fn]

	Mat 17:22	One day after they had returned to Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed.
	Mat 17:23	He will be killed, but three days later he will be raised from the dead." And the disciples' hearts were filled with grief.
	Mat 17:24	On their arrival in Capernaum, the tax collectors for the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, "Doesn't your teacher pay the Temple tax?"
	Mat 17:25	"Of course he does," Peter replied. Then he went into the house to talk to Jesus about it. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, "What do you think, Peter [fn]? Do kings tax their own people or the foreigners they have conquered?"
	Mat 17:26	"They tax the foreigners," Peter replied. "Well, then," Jesus said, "the citizens are free!
	Mat 17:27	However, we don't want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a coin. Take the coin and pay the tax for both of us."
