I. "THE LIGHT OF THE BODY IS THE EYE"
A. It is as a window pane.
1. If it is colored, you see everything tinted with that color.
2. If you are looking out of a dingy glass the whole world looks dingy.
3. If the glass is distorted the world looks distorted.
4. Things that distort our views.
a. Prejudice.
b. Jealousy.
c. Conceit.
B. "If the eye be single."
1. What is meant by a single eye?
a. David prayed "unite my heart."
b. Jesus is talking about treasures, our attitude toward material things.
c. Greek word trans. "Single" (hoplous) the noun form of this word is (kaplotes) "generous." James speaks of God giving to us (liberally) the adverb is "haplos."
C. "If thy eye be evil." (poneros)
1. Word means "stingy" or "grudging."
D. The Lord wants us to be generous.
1. In our actions.
2. In our attitudes.
II. "NO MAN CAN BE A SLAVE TO TWO LORDS."
A. Slave had no rights of his own.
B. Slave had no time of his own.
C. You could not give total allegiance to two lords.
D. "You cannot serve God and mammon."
1. Mammon originally meant sort of a depository. A place to which you entrusted your funds for safe keeping.
2. Gradually it changed to that which you were trusting in or your money itself.
3. You cannot be a slave of your possessions and serve God.
4. You cannot be a servant of God and be enslaved by your possessions.
We all have a super abundance. What do I do with the surplus? We call things necessities which people in the rest of the world call luxuries.
