Showing mercy is another spiritual gift.

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them . . . he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness (Romans 12:6,8).

All Believers

All believers are encouraged - even commanded - to show mercy.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Matthew 5:7)

Bear one anothers burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).

If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, "Depart in peace, be warmed and filled," but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? (James 2:15,16).

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all especially to those who are of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10).

The gift of showing mercy has to do with a special giving of ones time and self. It involves deeds of compassion on behalf of people in difficult situations, perhaps the sick or the down-and-out. The New Testament gives an example of the gift of showing mercy by a man named Onesiphorus. When the Apostle Paul was imprisoned in Rome, Onesiphorus showed mercy:

The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very diligently and found me (2 Timothy 1:16,17).

Onesiphoruss example is one that every Christian should follow. He spent time and effort to help one who was having difficulty, and he continually ministered to him.
