Son of a minister and teacher, Schein moved with his family to Dresden at age seven when his father died. Within six years, he was singing in the Dresden court choir and studying under its Kapellmeister. He went on to study at the University of Leipzig (1603), the Schupforta near Naumburg, and finally back at the University of Leipzig around 1607. Due to his demonstrated abilities, by 1615 he became the Kapellmeister at Weimar. In 1615, he was appointed cantor at the St. Thomas Kirche in Leipzig, preceding Johann Sebastian Bach there by more than a century.
