Nicholson attended the Rugby School, New College, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music. He played the organ in many locations:

- Manchester Cathedral
- Westminster Abbey
In 1927, Nicholson founded the School of English Church Music. He edited Hymns Ancient and Modern (1916-1947), and was knighted in 1938. His works include:
