| Surely there is a mine for silver, | |
| “Iron is taken out of the earth, | |
| “Man puts an end to darkness | |
| “He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives; | |
| “As for the earth, out of it comes bread, | |
| “Its stones are the place of sapphires,[fn1] | |
| “That path no bird of prey knows, | |
| “The proud beasts have not trodden it; | |
| “Man puts his hand to the flinty rock | |
| “He cuts out channels in the rocks, | |
| “He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle, | |
| “But where shall wisdom be found? | |
| “Man does not know its worth, | |
| “The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’ | |
| “It cannot be bought for gold, | |
| “It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, | |
| “Gold and glass cannot equal it, | |
| “No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; | |
| “The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, | |
| “From where, then, does wisdom come? | |
| “It is hidden from the eyes of all living | |
| “Abaddon and Death say, | |
| “God understands the way to it, | |
| “For he looks to the ends of the earth | |
| “When he gave to the wind its weight | |
| “when he made a decree for the rain | |
| “then he saw it and declared it; | |
| “And he said to man, | |
