I. "THAT GREAT DAY OF THE FEAST."
A. Double symbolism of water.
1. Wilderness supply.
2. Promise of water in desert places.
B. Reason for not pouring out on last day.
1. No longer need water now in land.
2. Promise not yet fulfilled.
C. In the midst of this background, Christ cries forth the Gospel in a short sentence, "If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink."
Thirst - Come - Drink.
II. THIRST - A RECOGNIZED NEED - SOMETHING OF WHICH WE ARE ACTIVELY CONSCIOUS.
A. Many thirst for that which cannot satisfy.
1. They thirst for world.
a. Pleasure, money, world, time, ease.
2. Over these must come the words of Christ, "He that drinketh of this water shall thirst again."
"The frail vessel thou hast made,
No hands but thine can fill,
For the waters of this world have failed,
And I am thirsty still."
B. Christ reference to that thirst that is nobler, thirst for Him.
1. Psalm 42:1, "As the heart thirsteth after the..."
III. "COME" EXPRESSES ACTION OF THE WILL.
A. Act of faith.
B. "Come unto me."
C. If you thirst:
1. Not come to the Lord's table.
2. Not come to the minister.
3. Not come join the church.
4. None of these can satisfy.
5. Come to Christ, none other.
IV. "AND DRINK." IT IS HERE MANY FAIL.
A. Conscience awakened, aware of need.
B. River flowing through land where people dying of thirst no value.
V. RESULTS OF DRINKING: "OUT OF HIS BELLY SHALL FLOW RIVERS OF LIVING WATER."
A. Belly of man is that which constantly craves.
1. Natural man's God (Phil. 3:19).
2. That part of man that is never satisfied.
B. Out of this part of man a gushing forth enough for self and others. (Christian life spring, not sponge).
C. Man must be full to overflow.
VI. "THIS SPAKE HE OF THE SPIRIT."
A. Man was made "in the likeness of God" yet incomplete.
B. Every man thirst for this completeness.
1. Some misinterpret this thirst.
a. Seek to satisfy thirst in world.
2. Only the coming in of the Spirit can satisfy thirst.
