"OUR DAYSMAN"
Intro: Background to text. Bildad's first discourse, he argues the justice of God.
I. HOW CAN A MAN BE JUST WITH GOD?
How can I plead my case before God?
A. Question arises from a double consciousness.
1. Greatness of God.
a. He removeth mountains. vs 5.
b. He shakes the earth. vs 6.
c. Commands the sun. vs 7.
d. He spread out the heavens. vs 5.
2. Smallness of man. vs 11.
a. I cannot see Him or perceive Him.
b. How can I speak of strength? vs 19.
c. David's awareness in Ps. 8.
1. God is so great how could He be mindful of me?
d. I am so small and God is so vast. How could I ever reach Him?
II. NEITHER IS THERE ANY DAYSMAN BETWIXT US. vs 33.
A. There is an unspanable gap between.
1. The finite and the infinite.
2. The mortal man & the eternal God.
B. The distance between God & man too great.
1. It is not a physical distance.
a. "In Him we move and live and have our being."
b. Dan. to Belshazzer "The very God in whose hand thy breath is."
2. A moral distance.
a. Sinful man-righteous God.
b. Two men on same plain-miles apart.
3. A dimensional difference.
a. "God is a spirit & they that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit..."
b. I live on plane of intellect or phyche.
c. Zophar "Who by searching can find out God?"
d. Paul "The natural mind discerneth not the things of the spirit, neither can he know..."
1. Man's intellectual quest for God ends in agnosticism. The need of a daysman.
2. Problem is not on God's side. "God's hand is not short that He cannot save...
B. A bridge is needed to span the gap. "That He might lay His hand upon us both."
1. Someone who could understand human weakness and suffering lay His hand upon me and says, "I understand."
2. Yet someone who was absolutely pure and holy so He could lay His hand upon God.
3. God could not touch me without destroying me. I could not touch God without being destroyed.
4. My innermost being cries out for God, but I cannot reach Him
5. O how I need a daysman to stand in that eternal gap.
III. "THERE IS ONE GOD, AND ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MAN THE MAN CHRIST JESUS."
A. "In the beginning was the Word...and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us & we..."
B. He, Christ Jesus stands in this gap low enough that I can reach Him, high enough that He can reach God.
1. He is God.
a. "And the Word was God."
b. "I and the Father are one."
c. He can lay His hand on the Father.
2. He became man.
a. And the Word became flesh.
b. And being in the form of God thought it not robbery to be equal with God...took upon Him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of man.
C. So I can come to God through Christ Jesus my Lord.
1. Man attempting to build bridges to God. God has built a bridge.
