I. WHO WERE THE UNGODLY?
A. Open willful sinners?
1. Blasphemers?
2. Lawbreakers?
not mainly intended here.
B. Men who deny God's existence?
1. Neglect outward forms of religion.
2. Jest at sacred things (included but not aimed at here).
C. Irreligious?
1. You can be religious and be ungodly.
2. To be religious is one thing to be godly another.
D. To be godly is to recognize God in all things.
1. To love, trust and serve Him.
E. The ungodly fails to recognize God in everyday life.
1. Lives as though there was no God.
2. He may attend church.
3. No bowing at His throne.
F. The Godly man does everything for God "For in Him we live and move and have our being."
1. They seek His fellowship constantly.
II. FEARFUL NEGATIVE.
A. "Not so the ungodly, not so."
1. Vs. 3 Righteous man "like tree planted by the rivers of water...shall prosper" (not so the ungodly, not so).
a. Not like a tree planted.
1. Like tree planted by chance in desert Compare tree planted and wild tree.
2. Planted by rivers of water.
a. roots go down to perennial supply (not so the ungodly, not so).
b. What a blessing to drink from rivers of Christ's fullness.
c. not so the ungodly, days of draught coming; you may have a little joy now.
3. "Bringeth forth his fruit in his season (not so)..."
a. They bring forth no fruit.
b. Some think because they commit no positive sin they are all right.
JDG 5:23 Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the Lord, curse ye bitterly the inhabitants thereof, because they came not to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty.
1. What has Meroz done?
2. Is she cursed? Why?
3. Did she fight against God? Maybe this is you. You don't fight against God, no enemy of Christ. No fruit! In your season.
4. What good are you for Kingdom of God?
5. What have you done for Christ?
B. "His leaf also shall not wither."
(not so)
1. The ungodly man's leaf shall wither.
2. Man last Sun. night still bringing forth fruit.
III. "THE UNGODLY ARE LIKE THE CHAFF (COMPARISON).
A. Not even like wild tree (for it has life).
B. Chaff covers the grain the grain alone is useful, the chaff useless and must be driven away.
Compared to chaff because:
1. Fruitless and useless.
2. Light and unstable, it is base and worthless.
IV. THE TERRIBLE PROSPECT OF THE WICKED.
"The wind driveth away."
A. How near the chaff is to the rain; envelops.
1. How close ungodly relate to righteous ungodly father & godly child covered.
