Sermon Outline for Romans 6:1-14

  1. Analysis of Rom 6:3-5
    1. Question: How did we die to sin?
    2. Answer: In the doctrine of our union with Christ
    3. The meaning of baptism in Rom 6
      1. Sacramental – the act or rite or performance of baptism joins us to Christ. The act itself
      2. Refers to baptismal vows – our vows put us into union with Christ
      3. This is not water baptism
      4. It is the baptism of the Holy Spirit – 1Co 12:13
        1. He joins us to Christ
        2. He puts us in the body
    4. “Know ye not?”
      1. Do you understand?
    5. “All who have been baptized into Christ”
      1. All believers have union with Christ
      2. Something that has been done for us
    6. “Into Jesus Christ”
      1. Totally, fully, completely
    7. Being baptized into Christ means –
      1. That we are joined to Him
      2. That we are participators in what has happened to Him
        1. We are joined with Him in His death
          1. It is an objective fact
          2. It is not a subjective experience
          3. It has happened
        2. Death to the reign of sin
        3. Burial is the proof of death
        4. We are joined to Christ in His resurrection
          1. Christ was raised by glorious power of the Father
          2. The same glorious power that raised Christ has done the same to us – Eph 1:19-20
          3. We have “newness of life”
            1. A new realm
            2. A new “walk” – 2Co 5:17
    8. The believer’s position
      1. Dead to the rule of sin
      2. Alive to the rule of grace
      3. It has been done for us
      4. We have been transferred
      5. The reign of sin produces results
      6. The reign of grace produces results
        1. We do not abide in sin
        2. Sin no longer rules our life
        3. We are not sinless
  2. Key Words of Rom 6
    1. Know – facts – Rom 6:3, 6, 9
    2. Reckon – count on it – Rom 6:11
    3. Yield – surrender – Rom 6:13, 16
    4. Obey – live accordingly – Rom 6:16
