"IT IS FINISHED."
Intro: The first recorded words of Jesus when 12-years old: "Did you not know, I must be about My Father's business?" In Samaria He said to disciples, "My meat is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work. Jesus said to the Jews; "The works that the Father has given Me to finish, the same works that I do bear witness of Me.
I. THE PROPHECIES CONCERNING HIS DEATH WERE NOW ACCOMPLISHED.
A. He was despised and rejected by men. Isa. 53:3.
1. Betrayed by a friend, forsaken by His disciples.
2. Led as a lamb to the slaughter.
3. The piercing of His hands and feet.
4. Numbered with the transgressors in His death.
B. Vs. 28 accomplished.
II. HIS SUFFERING IS NOW OVER.
A. Man of sorrows acquainted with grief.
1. He lived in shadow of the cross.
a. At beginning of public ministry in Cana, "My hour."
b. He spoke to Nicodemus, "Son of Man must be lifted up."
c. He talked to the disciples of the cup He must drink.
d. When Peter confessed, "Thou art the Messiah."
e. Moses & Elijah talked with Him about His death in Jerusalem.
2. He agonized as He faced the Cross.
a. "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass."
b. Being in agony, He sweat as if it were great drops of blood.
c. When Peter drew sword to defend. "The cup that the Father hath given to Me shall I not drink it?"
3. Now the cup is drained.
a. He will never suffer again "Once for all."
b. Never again will He be forsaken by the Father.
B. All that is finished.
III. THE PRICE FOR SIN IS NOW PAID.
A. Greek word, "Teleo" finished also translated paid, accomplished, performed.
B. Jesus had come to save those who were lost.
1. We were redeemed/purchased by His precious blood.
2. He was manifested to take away our sins.
C. All the types of redemption fulfilled.
1. The sacrifices in the tabernacle.
2. The skins God provided Adam to cover his sin.
3. The shelter from God's judgment in ark.
4. The sacrifice of the only well-beloved son by Abraham.
5. The blood on lintel of doorpost.
6. The lifting up of the serpent in the wilderness.
7. The rock smitten bringing forth life-giving water.
D. God has provided four proofs "It is finished."
1. Rending of the veil.
2. Resurrection of Christ from the dead.
3. Ascension into heaven.
4. Sending of the Holy Spirit.
E. No work can be added. It is finished.
1. Salvation comes not by works of righteousness, but by His grace alone.
2. Nothing a sinner can do but believe.
3. His finished work brings me relief for my failures and struggle to be good.
IV. THE END OF SATAN'S POWER.
A. "By one man sin entered into the world and death by, for death passed to all men for all sinned."
1. But through His death, He destroyed him who had the power of death, i.e., the devil - Heb. 2:14.
2. Satan is a defeated foe.
a. He once held me in bondage, I was a servant of sin.
b. Now I serve a risen Savior.
