"I WILL BLESS THE LORD AT ALL TIMES, HIS PRAISE SHALL CONTINUALLY BE IN MY MOUTH."
Intro. I want to look at both sentences in this verse. I will bless the Lord at all times, and His praise shall continually be in my mouth. The second sentence first, His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
I. NOTE THAT IN CONTRAST TO JUST A DAY OF THANKSGIVING, DAVID DECLARED THAT PRAISES TO THE LORD WOULD CONTINUALLY BE IN HIS MOUTH.
A. Note not just in his heart but in his mouth. Let us offer unto God the sacrifice of praise, even the fruit of our lips.
1. I believe that it is good to verbalize our praise and thanksgiving.
2. How many of you men, if your wife should say to you, "Honey, why don't you ever tell me that you loved me?" would be content if you answered, "I feel it in my heart." or, "I told you that once, and if it should ever change, I'll let you know."
B. I fear lest having set a day of Thanksgiving, that a person once honoring that day might feel that they have fulfilled their obligation of giving thanks to God for the year.
C. Rather than a Thanksgiving Day, why not a thanksgiving life? We could call it thanksliving.
1. Paul suggests that in EPH 5:20, Giving thanks always unto God the Father for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. David invites us to join with Him in praise, verse 3, "O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together."
3. Now the first sentence, "I will bless the Lord at all times." This answers many questions.
II. WHO? I. WHAT? WILL BLESS. WHOM? THE LORD. WHEN? AT ALL TIMES. HOW? WITH MY MOUTH. WHY?
A. That God heard his prayer, verse 4, "I sought the LORD, and he heard me."
1. God expects to hear from you, before you can hear from Him.
B. That God delivered him from all his fears, verse 4.
C. Verse 6, again that God heard his cries, "This poor man cried, and the LORD heard [him]."
D. That God saved him out of all his troubles, verse 6.
E. That the angel of the LORD encamps about them that fear Him, and delivers them, verse 7.
F. That the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and that His ears are open to their cries, verse 15.
G. That when the righteous cry, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles, verse 17.
H. That the Lord is near to them that are of a broken heart, verse 18, and He saves those who have a contrite spirit.
1. Contrite spirit, dakkeey ruach, "The beaten out spirit."
2. These are two necessities for forgiveness, broken heart, and a contrite spirit.
I. That though the righteous have many afflictions, the Lord delivers them out of them all, verse 19.
J. That the LORD redeems the soul of His servants: and none of them that trust in Him shall be desolate, verse 22.
1. The Hebrew word aw sham is translated in the King James, desolate. The word literally means guilty.
2. None who trust in Him shall be guilty. If you can think of no other reason to give thanks, surely this is sufficient, as you put your trust in Him, He pardons your guilt. You stand before God blameless.
3. You might ask, "But how can I not be guilty when I am guilty?"
a. For those who trust in Him, He took their guilt, God laid on Him the iniquities of us all.
b. He took the penalty for my guilt, and died in my place.
4. There is therefore now, no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, or those who have put their trust in Christ Jesus.
