"THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE."
Intro: One of the basic questions of man, "If a man dies, does he go on living?". Many look at death as the end, nothing beyond. The Christian hopes for eternal life.
I. THE BASIS FOR THAT HOPE.
A. The promises of God 1:2.
1. "And this is the record, God has."
2. "For God so loved the world..."
3. "I am the resurrection and the life."
B. The resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
1. "Thanks be unto God who has..."
2. Had Jesus not risen it would all be over.
a. How do we know He arose?
b. Those who testified to fact are the biggest liars and guttsiest men in history or heralds of the most glorious truth.
II. WHAT IS MEANT BY ETERNAL LIFE?
A. Quality of life as well as quantity.
1. First our bodies must be changed.
a. "Flesh & blood cannot inherit..."
b. "This corruption must put on..."
c. This will take place at the coming of Jesus Christ for you (death or rapture).
d. "For our citizenship is in heaven..."
e. "I show you a mystery."
2. A life of changed values.
a. That which is highly esteemed here worthless, there diamonds.
b. visa versa.
3. "No sin, sickness, sorrow; God shall wipe away all tears. The former things shall pass away..."
III. HOW IS THIS LIFE OBTAINED?
A. Vs. 5. Not by works of righteousness which we have done.
1. Not something I can earn.
