箴言12:21所作出的保证表明：“义人必不遭祸患，恶人却饱受患难。”（第21节）这句箴言必须被视为智慧箴言，而非否认义人会遭受苦难。所罗门所要表达的重点在于最终的道德结果，而非苦难的免除。
从最真实的意义上讲，义人不会遭受任何伤害，因为上帝守护着他们的道路，甚至连苦难也融入祂美好的旨意之中。苦难最终无法击垮他们，也无法摧毁上帝藉着义行所成就的美善。
然而，作恶者却饱受祸患。祸患如影随形，因为他们的道路不断招致祸患。他们内心充满不安，也常常在周围制造动荡。邪恶永无宁日，即便从远处看似乎一片繁荣昌盛。
