本章中最生动的警告之一出现在箴言17:12： “宁可遇见失去幼崽的母熊，也不要遇见愚昧人沉溺于愚昧之中。”（第12节）所罗门将沉溺于愚昧的愚人比作最危险的遭遇之一。
失去幼崽的母熊凶猛、焦躁、危险且充满威胁。然而，所罗门说，与其与愚昧之人为伍，不如与这样的母熊搏斗。为什么呢？因为愚昧与顽固的激情结合，是不可预测的、非理性的，并且难以用理性解释。它在精神和人际关系上的破坏力，是单纯的肉体危险所无法比拟的。
这句谚语并非指愚人真的像野兽一样。它指的是，深陷愚昧之中蕴藏着一种难以遏制的危险。一旦一个人被一意孤行的愚昧所吞噬，几乎不可能与他讲道理。因此，智慧告诫我们，切勿低估根深蒂固的愚昧所带来的破坏力。
