箴言17:18警告人们要警惕鲁莽的财务义务： “愚昧人当着邻舍的面作担保人。”（第18节）所罗门之前就谈到过轻率担保的危险，在这里他又再次提及。
担保人一事，意味着在缺乏明智判断的情况下，将自己束缚于他人的债务或责任之中。问题不在于慷慨，而在于愚蠢的承诺。一个人或许在当下感觉自己高尚，却承担了自己无力或不应承担的重担。
这就是所罗门称之为缺乏常识的原因。智慧懂得管家职分、界限和冷静判断的重要性。并非每一次想要拯救的冲动都是明智的。愚蠢的义务可能会伤害施予者和受托的家庭。
