本章以一句令人难忘的箴言结尾：愚昧人若沉默不语，也可算为智慧；闭口不言，也可算为精明（箴言17:28）。箴言17:28指出，沉默可以掩盖愚昧，却无法改变愚昧本身。
这句谚语虽带几分幽默，但也道出了真谛。因为许多愚蠢之举都源于口无遮拦，所以保持沉默至少可以避免一些此类暴露。一个傻瓜或许可以被视为智者，仅仅因为他尚未在言语中暴露自己。
