箴言17:4警告人们要提防道德上的欲望： “恶人听恶言的嘴唇，说谎的侧耳听害人的舌头。”（第4节）人们往往会倾向于那些与他们内心想法相符的言语。
作恶者听信恶言恶语，因为邪恶寻求认同和强化。我们愿意听什么，往往暴露了我们内心深处的渴望。一颗倾向于罪恶的心，常常会欢迎那些为罪恶开脱、煽动罪恶或将其正常化的声音。
同样，说谎者会留意那些伤人的言语。谎言会招致更多的谎言。当一个人已经背离真理时，伤人的言语就显得格外诱人。这句谚语表明，倾听本身就是一种道德行为。我们所接受的言语会影响我们未来的人生道路。
