箴言17:5将我们对待他人的方式与我们对待上帝的态度直接联系起来：戏弄贫穷人的，就是亵渎造他的主；幸灾乐祸的，必不免受罚（第5节）。贫穷人并非不在上帝的关怀之下。藐视他们就是侮辱创造他们的上帝。
嘲笑穷人就是将弱势群体视为蔑视的对象。所罗门说，这样做是在亵渎造物主，因为每个人都拥有上帝所造的尊严。因此，虐待弱者不仅仅是社会罪恶，更是神学上的叛逆。
第二行进一步阐述了警告。幸灾乐祸者，其心已被恶意腐蚀。他非但不施怜悯，反而以他人的堕落为乐。所罗门强调，这样的人必将受到惩罚。上帝憎恶以他人苦难为食的灵。
