箴言17:7指出何为合宜，何为不合宜：愚昧人说妙语尚且不合宜，君王更何况说谎之口呢（第7节）。有些话之所以不合宜，是因为它们与说话者的品格相悖。
愚人口中说出来，再好的言辞也显得矫揉造作，因为愚昧缺乏支撑高尚品格的内在内涵。愚人或许能一时模仿高雅的言辞，但最终都会暴露出其中的不协调。智慧必须植根于内心，而非仅仅停留在口中。
如果这种不匹配十分严重，那么君主说谎就更不合情理了。掌权者应当以诚实为本，因为他们的言辞关乎公正与秩序。领导者说谎尤其具有破坏性，因为它会扭曲良好统治赖以维系的信任。
