所罗门在箴言20:16中再次提出一个熟悉的警告： “若他为陌生人作保，就要拿他的衣服；若他为外邦人作保，就要拿他作抵押。”（第16节）箴言此前已经警告过不要为陌生人作保（箴言6:1-5 ；11:15；17:18；22 : 26-27）。
这节经文将训诫转向了放贷者。如果有人愚蠢到为陌生人做担保，明智的放贷者会要求提供实物抵押。这件衣服是最外层的衣物，通常用作男人晚上盖的毯子。
让他提供担保，是为了确保他的承诺是切实的，而非纸上谈兵。这句诗承认人性的愚昧，并告诫明智的放贷者要保护自己，免于被他人鲁莽的担保所牵连。
