所罗门在箴言20:25中警告人们不要轻率地谈论圣洁之事： “人若轻率地说‘这是圣洁的！’，许愿之后却查考，这是他的陷阱。” （第25节）在以色列，许愿常常意味着将某物献给耶和华。
贸然宣称“它是圣洁的！”就是在未权衡利弊之前就宣布某物为圣物献给上帝。所罗门称这种草率的宣告为陷阱。一旦话语出口，陷阱便已闭合，因为在上帝面前所说的话，不会因为说话者改变主意而改变。
发誓之后才去询问，便是自食其果。耶稣也注意到了这一点：“你们的话，是就说是，不是就说不是”（马太福音 5:37）。智者在说出神圣的话语之前，会斟酌再三。
