箴言20:9紧接着提出了一个发人深省的问题：谁能说：“我已洁净我的心，我已脱离我的罪”呢？ （第9节）这个问题是反问，也是谦卑之言，揭示了自我认知的局限性。
谁能说自己已经净化了心灵？无人能做到。敢如此宣称的人，并非真正做到了，而是丧失了认识自身状况的能力。自我反省是有局限性的，因为反省者和被反省者是同一个人。
谁能说自己罪孽深重？圣经人类学建立在这样一个前提之上：人心深不可测，远超其主人所能测透。耶利米直言不讳：“人心比万物都诡诈，坏到极处，谁能识透呢？”（耶利米书 17:9）。箴言对此留有悬念。圣经其他部分则给出了答案：唯有上帝能洁净人心，也唯有上帝能看透人心。
