The Bible Says
Proverbs 14:31 Meaning

Solomon writes in Proverbs 14:31 that He who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, but he who is gracious to the needy honors Him (v. 31). This verse connects treatment of the vulnerable directly to one’s attitude toward God.

To oppress the poor is to taunt his Maker because God made the poor as well as the powerful. To mistreat the vulnerable is to insult the Creator whose image they bear. This is a severe moral indictment.

But the one who is gracious to the needy honors Him. Mercy toward the vulnerable is an act of reverence toward God. This aligns with the wider biblical witness that care for the poor is not peripheral but central to faithful living.
