A sobering picture appears in Proverbs 15:11: Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the LORD, how much more the hearts of men! (v. 11). Solomon argues from the greater to the lesser. If God sees even the realm of death, surely He sees the human heart.
Sheol and Abaddon refer to the realm of the dead and destruction. These are places far beyond human reach, hidden from ordinary sight. Yet they lie open before the LORD. Nothing is concealed from His knowledge.
So how much more the hearts of men. Human beings can hide motives from one another, and often from themselves for a time, but not from God. This verse calls for honest living before Him. Wisdom begins when we stop pretending that our inner life is hidden.
