Proverbs 15:13 turns to the inner life and its outward expression: A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, but when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken (v. 13). Solomon notes that what is inside often works its way outward.
A joyful heart gives brightness to the face because inward gladness naturally appears in expression. Joy is not mere surface emotion; it is a condition of the inner person that can animate the whole body. This is one reason wisdom literature pays such close attention to the heart.
But when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken. Deep sorrow does more than change a mood, it can crush inward strength. Solomon is realistic about how pain touches the whole person. This verse invites compassion because it acknowledges that sadness can be spiritually exhausting.
