The Bible Says
Proverbs 15:18 Meaning

Proverbs 15:18 compares two kinds of people in conflict: A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but the slow to anger calms a dispute (v. 18). The difference lies not merely in personality but in wisdom.

The hot-tempered man stirs up strife because he carries combustible emotion into relational situations. His reactions amplify conflict. He brings unrest because he is governed by impulse rather than discernment.

But the one who is slow to anger calms a dispute. Patience interrupts escalation. This kind of person has enough inward steadiness to absorb tension without multiplying it. We see more of this principle reflected later in the New Testament, warning that human anger does not produce God’s righteousness (to learn more about how receiving God’s word and resisting anger leads to a life shaped by His righteousness, please read our commentary on James 1:19-21)
