The Bible Says
Proverbs 15:4 Meaning

A new image appears in Proverbs 15:4: A soothing tongue is a tree of life, but perversion in it crushes the spirit (v. 4). Solomon presents speech as something capable either of nourishing life or of breaking the inner person.

A soothing tongue is speech that heals, calms, and strengthens. It is called a tree of life, which is one of Proverbs’ richest images for vitality, blessing, and restoration. Wise words can steady a fearful heart, restore a weary soul, and nourish a struggling relationship.

But perversion in speech crushes the spirit. Twisted words can distort, humiliate, mislead, or wound so deeply that the inner person feels broken beneath them. Solomon reminds us that language is not light matter. Used well, it becomes life-giving; used perversely, it can do deep unseen damage.
