Proverbs 16:16 returns to one of its central values: How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver (v. 16). This is not a rejection of material goods in themselves, but a ranking of value.
Gold and silver are desirable, powerful, and useful. Yet wisdom is better because it teaches a person how to live rightly with whatever resources he has. Without wisdom, wealth can become an instrument of self-harm. With wisdom, even modest means can become fruitful.
Understanding is therefore not an optional luxury. It is the more fundamental good. Solomon keeps pressing this point because humans are naturally drawn to visible assets, while neglecting the inner formation that determines whether those assets will bless or destroy.

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
