Few proverbs are more famous than Proverbs 16:18: Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling (v. 18). Pride creates an illusion of invulnerability just before reality breaks in.
A haughty spirit is elevated self-confidence detached from God. It assumes stability and superiority. But because pride refuses correction and distorts perception, it places a person on the edge of collapse without letting him see the danger.
This is why pride so often precedes downfall. The destruction is not random; it grows out of the blindness pride itself creates. As Scripture consistently teaches, trusting ourselves rather than God leads to crookedness, confusion, and eventual frustration.
