The Bible Says
Proverbs 16:2 Meaning

A searching truth appears in Proverbs 16:2: All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the LORD weighs the motives (v. 2). Human beings are naturally skilled at self-justification. We tend to see our own path as reasonable, necessary, or innocent.

But God does not stop at outward appearance. He weighs the motives. That image suggests careful evaluation, as on a scale. He discerns not only what we do, but why we do it. The Lord sees beneath polished explanations and into the hidden purposes of the heart, which is why wisdom requires humility rather than self-trust.

This proverb warns us against assuming that sincerity equals righteousness. A person may feel clean in his own sight and still be wrong. The answer is not endless suspicion of oneself, but a posture of openness before God, asking Him to search and correct what we cannot rightly judge on our own.
