A life-giving image appears again in Proverbs 16:22: Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, but the discipline of fools is folly (v. 22). Understanding is not static information; it becomes a source of ongoing vitality.
A fountain of life suggests refreshment, supply, and continuity. One who truly has understanding is nourished by it and can often nourish others as well. Wisdom is living water for the practical realities of human life.
But the discipline of fools is folly. Even when fools encounter correction, they often turn it into more foolishness because the heart remains unchanged. Without humility, even disciplinary experience may fail to produce wisdom. The issue is not merely what happens to us, but whether we receive it well.
