The Bible Says
Proverbs 16:26 Meaning

Work and appetite come together in Proverbs 16:26: A worker’s appetite works for him, for his hunger urges him on (v. 26). Solomon observes that need often becomes a motivator for labor.

Hunger urges him on because necessity drives effort. There is a built-in connection between desire and work in ordinary life. Wanting provision becomes a spur toward action, and that impulse can be a useful part of God’s design.

This verse is not romanticizing hardship, but acknowledging a practical reality. Appetite, when rightly ordered, can move a person toward faithful labor rather than toward idle complaint. Proverbs often ties fruitfulness to the willingness to accept work as part of wise living.
