Relational damage is the focus of Proverbs 16:28: A perverse man spreads strife, and a slanderer separates intimate friends (v. 28). Perverse people do not merely live crookedly in private; they actively damage relationships.
To spread strife is to distribute conflict wherever one goes. The slanderer deepens the harm by using speech to divide those who were once close. Intimate friends can be pulled apart by suspicion, distortion, and malicious words.
This proverb is a powerful reminder that one of the enemy’s chief tools is relational fracture. Wisdom seeks peace, clarity, and truth; perversity seeks suspicion and separation. Where slander goes unchecked, friendship and community can unravel.
