Pride comes under direct judgment in Proverbs 16:5: Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; assuredly, he will not be unpunished (v. 5). Pride is not merely an unattractive trait. It is deeply offensive to God because it sets the self in the place of trust, rule, and evaluation that belongs to Him.
The phrase proud in heart points beneath behavior to inner posture. Pride is confidence in self apart from God, the belief that “I know best” or “I stand secure by my own power.” The broader teaching in Proverbs repeatedly frames pride as the opposite of faith, and that is exactly what this verse exposes.
Because pride is a refusal of reality, Solomon says he will not be unpunished. Reality eventually breaks the illusions pride creates. The proud may stand high for a season, but God’s moral order is built against self-exaltation. Humility is not ornamental in Proverbs; it is essential to life.
