One of the most beloved proverbs on friendship appears here: A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity (v. 17). Proverbs 17:17 speaks of steadfast love rather than convenience.
A true friend loves at all times. Such love is not seasonal or conditional. It remains through ordinary days and difficult ones. This is a beautiful picture of covenant-like faithfulness in human relationship: the kind of love that does not vanish when strain arrives.
The second line deepens that truth. A brother is born for adversity means there is a kind of family loyalty designed for hard moments. Whether literal family or one who becomes like family, the point is that close bonds are meant to show their strength in suffering, not merely in comfort.
