The Bible Says
Proverbs 17:18 Meaning

Proverbs 17:18 warns about reckless financial obligation: A man lacking in sense pledges and becomes guarantor in the presence of his neighbor (v. 18). Solomon has spoken before about the danger of rash surety, and he returns to it here.

To pledge and become guarantor is to bind oneself to another’s debt or liability without wise discernment. The problem is not generosity, but foolish commitment. A person may feel noble in the moment, yet take on burdens he is not called or able to bear.

That is why Solomon calls this lacking in sense. Wisdom knows the importance of stewardship, boundaries, and sober judgment. Not every impulse to rescue is actually wise. Foolish obligation can damage both the giver and the household entrusted to him.
