The Bible Says
Proverbs 17:2 Meaning

Proverbs 17:2 turns to household order and inheritance: A servant who acts wisely will rule over a son who acts shamefully, and will share in the inheritance among brothers (v. 2). Wisdom, not mere status, is what fits a person for honor and responsibility.

The servant who acts wisely is elevated because wisdom makes a person trustworthy. In the ancient household, inheritance and status were normally tied to birth, yet Solomon says character can overturn expected rankings. A shameful son may possess position by lineage, but folly makes him unfit to lead.

This proverb underscores that God’s moral order values faithfulness above appearances. The one who serves wisely becomes worthy of greater stewardship, while the one born into privilege can squander his place through foolishness. This anticipates the broader biblical theme that God often exalts the faithful and brings down the presumptuous.
