Proverbs 17:23 returns to corruption in judgment: A wicked man receives a bribe from the bosom to pervert the ways of justice (v. 23). Hidden corruption damages public righteousness.
The phrase from the bosom suggests secrecy. The bribe is received privately, concealed from open scrutiny. Wickedness often works in hidden exchanges, but the results are public: justice is bent, truth is denied, and the innocent may suffer.
To pervert the ways of justice is a grave evil because justice is one of the basic structures of communal life. When decisions can be bought, righteousness is displaced by advantage. Solomon’s concern is clear: wisdom cannot coexist with secret corruption.
