Pride and humility are again set in sequence in Proverbs 18:12: Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, But humility goes before honor (v. 12). Solomon is showing that outcomes often have moral beginnings.
A haughty heart lifts itself up in self-trust and self-importance. That inward elevation is often the prelude to collapse, because pride blinds a person to danger, correction, and dependence on God. Destruction rarely arrives out of nowhere; it is often preceded by an inflated heart.
By contrast, humility goes before honor. God’s order runs opposite the logic of pride. Honor is not seized through self-exaltation, but received through lowliness, teachability, and faithfulness. This principle runs throughout Scripture and finds its fullest embodiment in Jesus, who humbled Himself and was exalted.
