Proverbs 18:18 says, The cast lot puts an end to strife And decides between the mighty (v. 18). In the ancient world, casting lots could function as a recognized means of resolving disputed matters when human judgment reached its limits.
The proverb observes that the cast lot puts an end to strife by providing an accepted decision point. Rather than endless escalation, there was a mechanism for settling a matter when both sides submitted to the result.
It also decides between the mighty, meaning even powerful disputants may need an agreed-upon means of closure. The verse highlights the importance of resolution. Wisdom values processes that prevent conflict from consuming everything in its path.
