Relational rupture is pictured powerfully in Proverbs 18:19: A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle (v. 19). Broken trust in close relationships can become extremely difficult to repair.
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city because proximity intensifies hurt. The closer the relationship, the deeper the wound can go. Family-like bonds, once fractured, may become fortified by pain, defensiveness, and remembered grievance.
Thus contentions are like the bars of a castle. Conflict can lock people apart. This proverb does not say reconciliation is impossible, but it does show the seriousness of relational offense. Wisdom therefore urges great care in how we treat those closest to us.
