Conflict enters the picture in Proverbs 18:6: A fool’s lips bring strife, And his mouth calls for blows (v. 6). Folly is often self-injuring through speech.
A fool’s lips bring strife because he does not govern his words with humility or wisdom. He provokes, exaggerates, insults, or speaks rashly, and in doing so draws conflict toward himself. His mouth creates the very turmoil he later suffers.
That is why his mouth calls for blows. Solomon means that foolish speech invites painful consequences. The fool may think he is expressing strength, but he is actually summoning correction and backlash. Words can become a doorway through which trouble enters.

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
