Proverbs 19:1 starts by comparing integrity with crooked speech: Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool (v. 1). Solomon, son of David and king of Israel, again shows that moral quality matters more than outward status. Poverty is not ideal, but it is still preferable to corruption.
The poor man who walks in his integrity may lack resources, yet he possesses something better: wholeness of character. Integrity means his life is straight, honest, and undivided. He is not performing one version of himself in public while hiding another beneath the surface.
By contrast, the one who is perverse in speech is called a fool because crooked words reveal a crooked heart. Twisted speech bends reality, harms neighbors, and destabilizes the speaker. Solomon’s point is that lack of wealth is not the deepest poverty; lack of integrity is.
