A gracious proverb about restraint appears in Proverbs 19:11: A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression (v. 11). Wisdom is shown not only in what provokes us, but in what we choose not to let rule us.
Discretion makes a person slow to anger because understanding creates proportion. The wise do not react to every offense as though it were ultimate. They assess, weigh, and restrain. This is strength, not weakness.
It is even called his glory to overlook a transgression. Overlooking here does not mean calling evil good. It means refusing to magnify every slight into a conflict. There is a noble beauty in merciful restraint, in choosing peace over needless escalation.
