Proverbs 19:16 joins obedience and self-care: He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is careless of conduct will die (v. 16). God’s commands are not arbitrary burdens; they are protections for life.
To keep the commandment is to keep his soul. Obedience guards the inner person because it aligns a life with reality and with the God who designed that reality. This is one more way Proverbs teaches that wisdom serves our true best interest.
But the one who is careless of conduct will die. Carelessness about how one walks is deadly because paths have destinations. Conduct matters. A neglected moral life is not neutral ground; it is movement toward destruction.

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
