Mercy to the poor is lifted high in Proverbs 19:17: One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his good deed (v. 17). This is one of the most beautiful statements of divine identification with the needy.
To be gracious to a poor man is to treat him not with contempt, but with generosity and dignity. Solomon says such mercy is like making a loan to the Lord—not because God lacks anything, but because He so closely identifies with the vulnerable that He treats kindness shown to them as done to Himself.
And He will repay him. God notices, values, and remembers merciful action. The proverb does not reduce generosity to a transaction, but it does assure us that compassion is never unseen. The Lord takes it personally when His image-bearers are honored in their need.
