The Bible Says
Proverbs 19:23 Meaning

A strong promise about the fear of the Lord appears in Proverbs 19:23: The fear of the LORD leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil (v. 23). Reverence for God is presented as a life-path, not a single emotion.

The fear of the LORD leads to life because it aligns us with what is real and good. As Proverbs teaches, this fear is not mere dread, but the foundational trust that takes God’s instruction as more trustworthy than our own instincts.

The result is rest: one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. This is not a promise that no hardship will ever come. It is the peace of living within God’s order, where external trouble cannot finally rob the soul of its refuge. Wisdom brings rest because it is grounded in trust.
