A direct warning about rejecting instruction appears in Proverbs 19:27: Cease listening, my son, to discipline, and you will stray from the words of knowledge (v. 27). The path away from wisdom often begins simply by no longer listening.
To cease listening to discipline is to step away from one of God’s main means of keeping us on the path. Knowledge is not merely found once and then permanently possessed. It must be attended to and guarded.
If listening stops, straying begins and that is Solomon’s point. You will stray from the words of knowledge because drift is the natural result of neglected instruction. Wisdom requires ongoing receptivity, not a one-time moment of agreement.

The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
