The Bible Says
Proverbs 19:4 Meaning

Proverbs 19:4 observes a painful social reality: Wealth adds many friends, but a poor man is separated from his friend (v. 4). Solomon is not praising this dynamic, but exposing how often human relationships are distorted by advantage.

Wealth adds many friends because resources attract attention, loyalty, and apparent affection. But many of these friends are not attached to the person so much as to the benefit proximity may provide. The proverb therefore carries an undertone of warning as well as realism.

Meanwhile, a poor man is separated from his friend. Poverty can expose how fragile worldly loyalty often is. This verse helps us see the fallen tendency to value people by what they can provide, rather than by their God-given dignity.
